A young boy’s joy turns to heartbreak after a devastating flood destroys his home and Christmas gifts
Haydock: On New Year’s Day, Karolina Szynszecka and her son Jacob got some terrible news. Their home was flooded, and they lost everything.
They were celebrating in Manchester when Karolina’s ex-partner called to break the news. The heavy rain from New Year’s Eve caused the Sankey Canal to overflow, flooding their neighborhood.
Karolina said it all happened so fast. One moment they were having fun, and the next, their home was underwater. She couldn’t believe it when she heard. They didn’t even have time to save anything.
Jacob, just nine years old, was heartbroken. He had just opened his Christmas presents, including a PS5 and new iPhones, and now they were all gone. At school, he feels left out as his friends talk about their gifts.
Now, they’re staying with friends or in hotels, trying to figure things out day by day. Karolina is waiting for insurance money to help them find a place to stay. It’s tough for Jacob, too; he misses his mom and doesn’t understand why they can’t be together.
Karolina is grateful they weren’t home during the flood. She’s been looking for a temporary rental but is struggling to find someone willing to help. They need a place to stay until their home is fixed, which could take months.
