The Bishop of Liverpool, John Perumbalath, denies allegations of sexual assault and harassment, stating he has complied with all investigations.
One woman accused him of kissing her without consent and groping her. Another woman also alleged sexual harassment. Bishop Perumbalath insists he has always denied these claims.
He stated he has cooperated with all investigations by the National Safeguarding Team. He mentioned that the police looked into the allegations but took no further action.
This situation comes after the Archbishop of Canterbury resigned. His resignation followed a review about a camp leader who abused many but was not reported to the police.
Bishop Perumbalath emphasized that the incidents occurred in public places with others around. He takes these allegations seriously and is open to any further investigations.
A Church of England spokesperson confirmed that a complaint against him was made in early 2023. They found insufficient evidence for a safeguarding complaint but offered support to the complainant.
The spokesperson also mentioned that a second woman later came forward. However, her case was not considered a safeguarding issue but rather misconduct.
The second complainant missed the one-year deadline to file a complaint. She later sought permission to file, which was supported by the Archbishop of York but ultimately denied.
The Church of England assures that all complaints are taken seriously and treated with respect. They continue to offer support to those who come forward.
