Runcorn: You wouldn’t expect to find Billy Connolly’s favorite banjo shop here. But it’s true! Frailers is a hidden gem tucked away on a quiet street.
This shop is special. It’s filled with guitars, banjos, and music memorabilia. Since opening in 1979, many famous musicians have visited.
Frank Murphy, the owner, has seen Billy Connolly six times. He loves chatting with him. Frank opened the shop over 50 years ago and still works there six days a week.
Billy first came in over 25 years ago to fix his banjo. He was recommended by folk singer Mike Harding. They quickly bonded over their love for music.
Frank remembers when Billy came in after a show. He had a Martin guitar from Eric Idle that needed repairs. Billy said he loved the shop and all the Martins inside.
Photos of other famous visitors hang on the walls. Noddy Holder, Joe Bonamassa, and Alex Turner are just a few who have stopped by.
Frank enjoys meeting everyone. He says it’s important that people want to come to Frailers. He looks forward to every day and never takes days off.
Originally from Liverpool, Frank knew many famous bands. He opened a fashion shop called ‘Banjo’ before starting Frailers in Runcorn.
Musicians often drop by after sound checks in nearby cities. One rainy day, Joe Bonamassa came in looking for memorabilia. He wanted a special Gibson clock from the shop.
Frailers is always busy. Musicians of all ages come in to try out instruments. Frank has no plans to retire. He loves his work and the people who visit.
