Cwmbran: So, there’s some news about the Grange Hospital. They’ve put in plans for a temporary building to help with the bed situation. It’s all about making things easier for patients and staff.

The health board wants to set up this unit in a car park, and they’re hoping to get it done by early 2025. They’re planning to build it off-site and then crane it into place, which should save some time.

Originally, they thought they could have it ready by January, but it looks like that timeline has shifted a bit. The new unit will have space for 12 beds and a treatment room, plus other facilities like a kitchen and staff room.

This move comes after the Welsh Ambulance Service declared a critical incident. They’ve been struggling with delays, especially with ambulances waiting outside the hospital. It’s been a bit chaotic, with reports of up to 18 ambulances stuck there.

The Grange Hospital opened in 2020, but it’s been a bit of a juggling act since then. They’ve had to adapt their services, and the current discharge lounge just isn’t cutting it. It only has six beds, and with around 50 patients being discharged daily, it’s getting cramped.

They’re also looking to hire six new consultants to help out, which should ease some of the pressure. The planning application is still under review, but fingers crossed it all goes smoothly!
