Swansea: It’s a sad day for the community as we remember Cllr Wendy Fitzgerald, who recently passed away after a short illness. She was a well-loved figure in Penllergaer, serving as an Independent councillor for nearly 21 years. Her family was by her side at home, and the council is honoring her memory by flying flags at half-mast.

Council leader Rob Stewart shared his heartfelt condolences, calling her a dedicated champion for the people. He expressed how much she would be missed by everyone at the council. Wendy was not just a councillor; she was a friend to many.

She first got elected in 2004 and even served as a cabinet member for social services. Her commitment to her community was evident, and she was always ready to speak up for Penllergaer.

Her passing has left a big hole in the community. Cllr Chris Holley from the Lib-Dems said it was a terrible loss, highlighting how well she served her area. Everyone is in shock over the loss of someone so vibrant and humorous.

Wendy was also involved in various community roles, including being a school governor and part of the Penllergare Trust. She loved gardening and even started a crafting group that brought people together.

She was set to become the lord mayor of Swansea in 2025, a role she was looking forward to. Lord mayor Cllr Paxton Hood-Williams expressed his deep condolences, noting how much Wendy was respected and how greatly she would be missed.

Her husband, known as Fitz, shared that it would have been an honor for her to serve as lord mayor, emphasizing her hard work and dedication. Wendy, who was 81, had been battling cancer and returned home from the hospital just before Christmas. She passed away on New Year’s Day.

A local community group shared a touching tribute, saying Wendy was not just a councillor but a dear friend to many. Her impact on the village will be felt for years to come, and she will be missed by all who knew her.
