Belfast Harbour is set to invest £313 million over five years, enhancing housing and cruise facilities while boosting local economic growth.
Belfast: Big news from Belfast Harbour! They’re planning to pump over £300 million into various projects over the next five years. This includes new housing, retail spaces, and improved facilities for cruise ships. Sounds exciting, right?
The plan, called Advance Regional Prosperity 2025-2029, is all about making the port better and boosting the local economy. They’re looking at investing £208 million for port upgrades and £105 million for the Harbour Estate and waterfront development.
One of the biggest projects is a £90 million deepwater quay. This will allow the port to welcome some of the largest cruise ships and help with offshore wind turbine assembly. It’s a game-changer for the area!
They expect to finish the first stage of the quay by 2027-28, which will really help boost cruise tourism. Right now, that’s worth about £20-25 million to the local economy each year.
By 2030, they plan to have the second stage ready, which will further enhance the port’s capabilities. This is crucial for the future of clean energy in Northern Ireland and beyond.
The strategy has four main goals: drive economic growth, improve the port, create vibrant living spaces, and innovate for a sustainable future. They’re really focused on going green!
Other cool projects include new eco-friendly cranes, a rebuild of Stormont Wharf, and even autonomous vehicles to help with transport around the port.
They’re also looking to develop City Quays 5, which will have offices, shops, and homes, including affordable housing. Plus, they want to build 3,000 more homes by 2030. That’s a lot of new places!
By 2029, they plan to roll out an autonomous passenger vehicle called ‘The Harlander’ to help people get around. It’ll connect public transport to local businesses and attractions.
Dr. Theresa Donaldson, Chair of Belfast Harbour Commissioners, said this investment will help the local economy grow and enhance their reputation as a top cruise destination.
Joe O’Neill, the CEO, emphasized that this strategy is all about benefiting everyone in the community. They’re committed to making Belfast Harbour a leader in clean energy and sustainable development.
Conor Murphy, Minister for the Economy, welcomed the plans, highlighting their importance for job creation and reaching net zero by 2050. It’s all about building a brighter future for everyone!
Cat McCusker from the Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce praised Belfast Harbour for its commitment to investments that improve the economy and the lives of people in the region. Exciting times ahead!
