But don’t worry if you’re not into the digital scene. The government says you can still get a hard copy if you prefer that. They want to make sure everyone has a choice.
Peter Kyle, the Science and Technology Secretary, is excited about this digital future. By 2027, they hope to have a whole range of documents available in this digital wallet, from DBS checks to other government IDs.
He mentioned that this wallet will make it easier to prove your identity for things like benefits or buying age-restricted items. It’s all about security and trust, which is a big deal these days.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is also on board, calling this a “game-changer” for people who use their driving licence as ID. She believes it will make everyday tasks quicker and more secure.
This digital shift is part of a larger plan to improve public services and save money. They’re aiming for £45 billion in efficiency savings, which is quite ambitious!
