A Bolton Wanderers fan allegedly made a racist remark to Exeter City’s Josh Magennis during a recent League One match
Exeter: So, during a League One match at St James Park, a Bolton Wanderers fan allegedly made a racist comment aimed at Josh Magennis, the Exeter City captain. The game had to pause for a bit after the comment was heard from the away section.
Magennis, who used to play for Bolton, told the referee, Ben Speedie, about the comment. The officials then followed the proper steps to address the situation, letting everyone know what happened. This announcement came just as Bolton scored their winning goal, which was a bit awkward.
Exeter’s manager, Gary Caldwell, expressed his disappointment after the match. He said they don’t want racism in football or society. He praised Josh for reporting the incident and assured him that the club would support him in any way needed.
Caldwell mentioned that they’re looking into the matter and hope to identify the person responsible. He didn’t hear the announcement during the game but acknowledged it was an unpleasant moment in an otherwise exciting match.
In the game, Demetri Mitchell had given Exeter a 1-0 lead early in the second half, but Aaron Collins equalized late in the game. Then, Aaron Morley scored the winner for Bolton in stoppage time, right as the announcement about the racist comment was being made.
As of now, neither Exeter City nor Bolton Wanderers has released an official statement regarding the incident.
