Aldi has been named the UK’s cheapest supermarket for 2024, outperforming Lidl and offering significant savings for shoppers
London: Aldi has officially taken the title of the cheapest supermarket in the UK for 2024, leaving Lidl in the dust. This news comes from the consumer site Which?, which did some serious number crunching.
They looked at prices from eight major supermarkets, including Asda and Tesco, to see who had the best deals on everyday items. Turns out, Aldi was the cheapest for all 12 months, especially for a basic list of 56 groceries like milk and bread.
Shoppers who chose Aldi saved an average of £393 over the year compared to those who went to Waitrose, which is the priciest option out there. Harry Rose, the editor of Which?, mentioned that many families are looking to save money after the holiday season, and switching supermarkets can really help.
In December, that shopping list at Aldi cost about £100.29, while Lidl was just a smidge more at £101.48. Even with their loyalty program, Lidl couldn’t quite catch up. Waitrose, on the other hand, was a whopping £29.54 more expensive than Aldi.
The list of groceries included both well-known brands and store brands, and the research factored in special offers but not bulk buys. Interestingly, Asda was the cheapest for larger shops of 150 items, but only for part of the year.
Overall, it looks like Aldi is the go-to for budget-conscious shoppers, especially with rising costs everywhere. So, if you’re looking to save some cash, it might be time to check out your local Aldi!
