Alba MSP Ash Regan expresses hope for a swift conclusion to the SNP finances investigation, acknowledging the need for unity in the pro-independence movement.
Edinburgh: An Alba MSP, Ash Regan, hopes the police investigation into SNP finances will wrap up soon. She mentioned that the pro-independence movement feels a bit divided and needs to come together.
Operation Branchform started in 2021. It looks into how over £600,000 from indyref2 donations was used. At that time, Nicola Sturgeon was the SNP leader, and her husband, Peter Murrell, was the party’s chief executive.
Last year, Murrell faced charges related to embezzlement, and the investigation is still ongoing. Lord Carloway, Scotland’s top judge, noted a delay in the process last month.
Regan, who is running for the Alba leadership, said these investigations can take time. However, she remains hopeful for a resolution soon.
Former SNP MP Tommy Sheppard pointed out that the investigation has lasted over three years. He emphasized the need for a conclusion, as the uncertainty is affecting Scottish politics.
In April 2023, the investigation gained UK-wide attention when police searched Sturgeon and Murrell’s home for two days. They also searched the SNP headquarters in Edinburgh.
Sturgeon was arrested in 2023 but released without charge. She has denied any wrongdoing, and she and Murrell have since separated.
Regan is competing for the Alba leadership against former Alba MP Kenny MacAskill.
