Advisers suggest closing Ladies Mile Road in Bristol for a trial weekend to improve safety and explore new uses for the area
Bristol: So, there’s this talk about closing a road called Ladies Mile for a weekend trial. The idea is to make it safer and maybe even use the space for events. Sounds interesting, right?
The Downs Advisory Panel is the group behind this suggestion. They can’t close the road themselves, but they can recommend it to the Downs committee. They think it could be a good move for a Bank Holiday weekend.
The committee is set to meet soon to chat about this and other stuff, like parking plans and some issues with van dwellers. It’s a mix of local councillors and members from the Society of Merchant Venturers.
Robert Westlake, who leads the advisory panel, mentioned that this closure could help explore new activities in the area. Plus, it might help with some of the anti-social behavior that’s been a problem lately.
He pointed out that Ladies Mile has had issues with illegal parking and driving. The road doesn’t really serve a purpose other than being a shortcut for commuters. A trial could help them see how people feel about possibly closing Circular Road to traffic in the future.
Interestingly, they talked about closing this road a few years back, but it didn’t happen because of concerns from the nearby zoo about access. But now that the zoo has moved, that’s no longer an issue.
They’ve also suggested having security patrols in the evenings to deal with things like car meets that have been causing trouble at the Downs.
