Drivers are urged to plan ahead as night closures begin for A38 Saltash Tunnel upgrades
Plymouth: So, the A38 Saltash Tunnel is getting some much-needed TLC. Starting January 13, they’ll be closing the eastbound side on weeknights from 8 PM to 6 AM. It’s all part of a big upgrade project.
Don’t worry, though! The westbound lane will still be open. If you’re heading east, you’ll need to take a detour from Carkeel roundabout. Just follow the B3271 and North Road to get around.
This tunnel has been around for 37 years, and they’re investing £25 million to modernize it. The first phase includes new lighting, fans, and electronic signs. They’ll be doing some digging and piling work first, then moving on to the cabling and lighting.
Julian Mitchell, the Tunnel Manager, mentioned that they know closures can be a pain, but safety comes first. The tunnel is a vital link between Plymouth and Cornwall, so they’re working closely with local partners to minimize disruptions.
From February 25, expect full overnight closures on weeknights, too. The second phase will kick off in the summer, focusing on tech upgrades and new signage.
