Drivers are urged to plan ahead as the A38 Saltash Tunnel undergoes essential night work starting January 13
Plymouth: So, here’s the scoop. National Highways is telling drivers to get ready for some night closures on the A38 Saltash Tunnel. Starting January 13, they’ll be closing the eastbound side on weeknights from 8 PM to 6 AM. It’s all part of a big upgrade project.
While the eastbound lane is shut, the westbound lane will stay open. If you’re heading east, you’ll need to take a detour from Carkeel roundabout, using the B3271 and North Road. Just a heads up to plan your route!
This tunnel is 37 years old and is getting a major facelift this year. The first phase includes some serious work like piling, excavation, and installing new lighting and signage. It’s a big deal for the area.
Julian Mitchell, the Tunnel Manager, mentioned that they know closures can be a pain, but it’s necessary for safety. The tunnel is a key route between Plymouth and southeast Cornwall, and they’re investing a lot into this project.
They’re trying to keep the closures to a minimum and appreciate everyone’s patience. So, if you’re driving through, make sure to give yourself a little extra time.
The whole upgrade will cost around £25 million and will happen in two phases. Starting February 25, expect full overnight closures on weeknights too. The second phase will kick off in the summer, focusing on tech upgrades and new signage.
