SEGRO is building a logistics park on the old Radlett airfield. The site sits between Park Street and other areas, and this project caused a lot of arguments. Some people tried to stop it in court, calling it the “Save the Freight Campaign.”

I went to see SEGRO’s huge site to understand the project better, as people in Herts will live with it now. I ate lunch at the site canteen and talked to Charles Blake from SEGRO.

He said transparency is very important and that they want good communication with locals. The park will bring jobs and green spaces. It will also have a rail freight interchange, and SEGRO, as a long-term investor, sees benefits in rail freight plans.

They already finished a first big step: building an underbridge that goes under the Midland Mainline. The railway was closed for nine days, and they worked on the bridge for five of those days.

A Network Rail worker named Andy told me about it, saying they worked through Christmas and joked about missing his turkey dinner. They moved a lot of dirt and used jacks to push the bridge in place.

The park will have lots of warehouse space, woodland, and a country park. The plan includes many new paths that will connect to existing trails.

The project is in early stages, but it’s big. They moved newts somewhere safer, and SEGRO staff understand the area well. The site felt very large to me.

The project will change the Park Street Roundabout, improving access to the A414, a road change that people wanted. They will build a new road off Watling Street to link the park to the A414, and the roads could be done next year.
