Newcastle-under-Lyme: So, it turns out that on Christmas Day, folks were really unhappy about the smell coming from Walleys Quarry. The local council got a whopping 92 complaints that day alone!

The operators of the quarry, Walleys Quarry Ltd, are actually fighting back against the Environment Agency’s order to shut the place down. But the council is stepping up to back the EA in this legal battle. They’re planning to use a ton of evidence to support the EA when the appeal goes to the Planning Inspectorate.

Simon Tagg, the leader of the council, even wrote a personal letter to the Planning Inspectorate, saying how hard they’ve worked for the community. He mentioned that everyone on the council agrees the landfill should be closed and restored.

He said they’ve got loads of evidence to back up their claims, like air quality readings and complaint data. It’s clear they’re serious about tackling those awful gas odors that have been bothering residents for years.

Even though the closure notice started on November 29, people are still complaining about the smell. In December alone, the council received over 1,100 complaints, which is a huge jump from the previous year.

Cllr Tagg emphasized that residents are still dealing with these odors and that they need a solid, long-term solution fast. He encouraged everyone affected to keep reporting the issues.

If you want to file a complaint, you can reach out to the Environment Agency at 0800 807060 or do it online. The council is also open to complaints, so don’t hesitate to let them know!
