Catch up on the biggest news from Dublin this week, from weather woes to heartfelt farewells
Dublin: The holiday buzz has faded, and many of us are back to the grind, still trying to remember what day it is. Can you believe we’re already a week into 2025? With schools reopening soon, life is about to get back to normal—unless the weather has other plans.
This new year kicked off with a chill, as temperatures dropped and snow made its way to some areas. But that’s not all that’s been on people’s minds in the capital this week. We’ve rounded up some of the biggest stories from the past seven days, just in case you missed anything.
First up, the freezing temperatures are sticking around. Many woke up to snow, and while Dublin has mostly dodged it for now, there’s a chance it could hit later today. Either way, we’re in for some seriously cold days ahead, with a Status Yellow snow and ice warning in effect until Thursday. People have been rushing to stores, clearing out bread and milk like it’s the end of the world.
In sad news, a couple from Blanchardstown lost their lives in an alleged hit-and-run on St. Stephen’s Day. Anthony Hogg and Georgina Hogg-Moore were struck while crossing the road near a shopping center. Their funeral was packed, with loved ones remembering them as the “life and soul” of their family. A man has been charged in connection with the incident.
On a lighter note, a beloved pub in the city center, The Living Room, is closing its doors for good. Customers are heartbroken, but the team promises an exciting new chapter is on the way, so stay tuned!
Meanwhile, with flu, RSV, and Covid cases rising, Tallaght Hospital and several others have put visiting restrictions in place. They’re only allowing visits on compassionate grounds or limiting it to one or two visitors per day. The hope is to lift these restrictions soon.
And here’s some good news: the first baby of the year in Dublin arrived just 19 seconds into 2025! Baby Bradley was born to Eve Colley and Eric Tyrell at the National Maternity Hospital. Just nine minutes later, another baby boy was welcomed at the Rotunda Hospital. What a way to start the year!
