Chelmsford City Council is set to unveil plans for over 26,000 new homes
Chelmsford: The city is gearing up for some big changes. The council is about to kick off a consultation on its new development plan. This plan will decide where thousands of new homes will go over the next 19 years.
They’re looking to ramp up the housing target from about 953 homes a year to 1,406. That’s a significant jump! By 2041, they expect to see more than 26,000 new homes built.
So, where will these homes be? Well, around 4,450 are planned for central and urban Chelmsford. There’s a new site at Andrews Place, and while the former Kay Metzeler site won’t be redeveloped, they’re increasing housing at the Meadows Shopping Centre.
North Chelmsford is set to get over 7,200 new homes, while south and east Chelmsford will see around 4,400 new homes, including a new garden community at Hammonds Farm.
The council plans to start the consultation on February 4, with a meeting on January 16 to discuss everything. Cllr Stephen Robinson, the council leader, emphasizes the importance of community input. He wants to ensure they build affordable homes and create jobs for locals.
He mentioned that the Local Plan aims to create great places that are easy to get around, promoting walking, cycling, and public transport. It’s not just about putting up houses; it’s about building communities with good infrastructure.
The council is ready to move forward with the final public consultation, which will check if the plan meets all the necessary regulations and policies. This is all part of a bigger effort to make Chelmsford a better place to live.
