Despite pouring rain, over 10,000 people gathered in Manchester to enjoy a spectacular fireworks display and welcome the new year with joy.
Manchester: So, picture this: it’s New Year’s Eve, and the weather is just awful. But that didn’t stop over 10,000 Mancunians from heading out to St Peter’s Square for a fireworks show. They braved the rain and wind, umbrellas in hand, ready to ring in the new year.
For the first time, the fireworks were launched from the roof of the central library. It was a bit of a gamble with the weather, but the council decided to go ahead with the plans. They told everyone to bundle up and bring their waterproofs. Smart move!
Damandu and his friends drove two hours just to catch the display. Kit, one of the friends, said, “Fireworks are always magical. We couldn’t miss this year’s, even with the rain.” And you know what? They weren’t alone in that thought.
As the crowd gathered, one guy decided to keep spirits high with an impromptu drum and bass set. Luke, a 32-year-old from Kent, was all about spreading cheer. He said, “It’s New Year’s Eve, so I thought I’d come out here and play some music.” And it worked! People were dancing and having a good time despite the downpour.
Many folks took shelter under nearby buildings, trying to stay dry while still catching glimpses of the fireworks. Abi from Cardiff was there for his first Manchester fireworks display. He was excited but definitely preferred to watch from a dry spot.
Even with the rain, the square filled up quickly. The council had expected around 20,000 people, but the weather cut that number in half. Still, over 10,000 showed up, ready to celebrate. The atmosphere was electric, with umbrellas everywhere and people in high spirits.
As the countdown to midnight began, the rain became part of the fun. People started doing ‘brolly’ dances, and the crowd roared as the fireworks lit up the sky. It was a sight to behold, with cheers and gasps echoing through the square.
“Only in Manchester,” said local councillor Pat Karney, capturing the spirit of the night perfectly. It was a night to remember, rain and all!
