Kensington: There’s a big redevelopment project worth £1.3 billion happening in West London, but it seems like they forgot something important. A petition has popped up, and over 1,000 locals are asking for lifts at Kensington (Olympia) station. Without them, some folks might find it tough to access the new site.

Jane Bird, a 67-year-old resident, kicked off the petition with a neighbor. She’s worried that without lifts, people with mobility issues won’t be able to visit the new Olympia. The company behind the project, Yoo Capital, says they’re on board with the idea of adding lifts and want to keep chatting with everyone involved.

The redevelopment got the green light from Hammersmith and Fulham Council back in 2019. It’s set to transform the area, which has hosted events like Crufts, into a vibrant space with bars, restaurants, and even a 4,000-person music venue.

They’re calling it a ‘cultural landmark’ and it’ll have loads of workspace too, including recording studios. After some delays, they’re hoping to start opening parts of it later this year.

Kensington (Olympia) is the closest station, serving both Overground and District line trains. While it’s managed by TfL and Arriva Rail London, Network Rail owns the station.

The Local Olympia Residents Group is pushing for funding to add lifts, saying it would make a huge difference for many people. They argue that the cost of installing lifts is minimal compared to the benefits it would bring.

Currently, the station is step-free, but the long walk from one side to the other is a real hassle for those with mobility challenges. Jane, who uses a mobility scooter due to her MS, is part of a group of residents from around 20 streets who are concerned about the redevelopment.

She was shocked to learn that lifts wouldn’t be included. It felt like a real oversight to her, especially since it could make a big difference for many people trying to access the new site.

Yoo Capital has expressed their support for the lift installation, emphasizing the importance of accessibility for everyone. They’re keen to work with Network Rail and TfL to make it happen.

Transport for London also recognizes the need for better access and is committed to increasing the number of step-free stations. They’re ready to back the idea of lifts at Kensington (Olympia) and are working with Network Rail to secure funding for improvements.

Network Rail has stated they’ll keep collaborating with the developer and local authorities to enhance accessibility. It’s clear that everyone wants to make this redevelopment a success for all.
